 Hola hello,

I hope you had a good Christmas and New Year (for those who don't celebrate either - I hope you managed some much needed rest during the holidays as 2016 was a rough year).

So I had lots happening in 2016. Moving house a few times (once as my home was being sold and another to move in to a place together with my girlfriend), busy with lots of caricature bookings and commissions (some caricatures and some my illustration work).

2017 has started off a little slow as I finish a commission (hoping to upload images of this in the next update), catching up on emails and admin and I still need to organise my 2017 with some new and exciting ideas. ...then there's yet ANOTHER MOVE! This time to a mold and damp free home (we hope).

So to break the "radio silence" I thought I'd give you a little tease of what I'm planning for 2017:

Stay tuned and subscribe for more updates soon. Happy 2017!

The craaaazy jazz, man, craaaazy.....

Beatniks!

"Bless you"

No really - they're a thing... well they were... well... maybe they are again thanks to the current hipster trend.

I'd seen the 'look' before but when I was asked to draw some "Beatniks" for a gallery of jazz themed artwork at the back of a friends re-published comic book I was confused as to what I was asked to draw.

Some research later and I find it's a group of people who dressed a certain way and were "...a media stereotype prevalent throughout the 1950s to mid-1960s that displayed the more superficial aspects of the Beat Generation literary movement of the 1950s." Thanks Google, old friend!

So below is the final image and as I like cats - I threw some in for fun. Cats and Beatniks go well together, don't you think?

Image Watermarked as there's a new wave of art thieving ******** out there - GRR!
I enjoyed drawing this and can't help but think these characters could become a comic book in themselves.

Looking to get your band drawn like this for an album cover or for promotional material? Drop me a line! mikeyb@theartyone.co.uk

The Walking Wed

Hola hello!

I hope all you awesome people out there are well ...and not dying in the heat (although the current heatwave has subsided now it seems).

Speaking of dying.... do you like Zombies? Who doesn't like zombies? They're so cute!

A recent commission I was asked to do was a little different. Not so caricatured but stylised in a comic book way with the theme of

The Bride to be wanted a customised comic book style picture of her and her hubby sporting weapons of characters from the TV series and to be surrounded by zombies. Below is the final result...

I have to watermark my artwork now as there are thieves out there stealing my artwork to sell for themselves - please note that any artwork I do for you will not be watermarked when you receive it.

I really enjoyed working on this commission. If you are after a zombie themed or other tv series themed picture of yourself, your friends or family or even someone at work - drop me a line caricatures@theartyone.co.uk

OPPS! Belated Seasons greetings...

Opps!

I posted this on my social media but forgot to schedule this update for my website.

Stan, Mikey and Tim coming to a doorstep this Christmas.

I hope everyone had a Great Christmas (or holidays if Christmas isn't your thing) and wish you all the best for 2015 (or if you use a different calendar then happy new year for whenever your new year is).

Do I have any arty plans for this year or new year resolutions I hear you ask...

Well I have more to do with Stan and Tim's Imaginative Adventures and hopefully by Christmas 2015 I'll have a book of them to sell.

I also plan to use the web and TV less to entertain myself and to use my drawing/painting skills as my own amusement and entertainment. A recent realisation that we use TV and the Internet too much to entertain ourselves is slowly killing creativity in the world... and for me and my line of work that's not good news.

Creativity comes from being bored and trying to entertain yourself and others - how can we be original when we are being entertained 24/7 by tv and the web?

So say tuned and let's see where my boredom takes me...

Peace n love - Mikey

More comics

Warchild comic book/graphic novel

About a year ago I did a few sample pages of a story written by Roger Cottrell called 'Warchild'. These pages are to be used as a way of visualising some of the story to potential publishers and/or funders which would give the project and myself the funds required to finish illustrating the entire graphic novel.

I really enjoyed doing this project and hope to get a chance to finish the work at some point. However, I do remember the many hours of frustration that came from trying to draw a 'futuristic tank'. It's harder than you might imagine. So many angles to deflect bullets = so many angles to draw incorrectly = a look alikey of a deformed tortoise shell with a canon on top!

Since then Roger has been approaching various people and companies with regards to funding and publishing it (Image Comics and 2000AD to name a few) and has received much interest. Today he is attending a very important meeting with a large, shall we say, multi-media company.

Fingers crossed, Roger!

Here's to drawing some kick-ass Sci Fi ...and of course more tanks.

Comics

They say the world will end in 2012. ...but did you know it was caused by a vengeful cockroach called Colin?
Page 1 of 4 - THE COCKROACH SHALL INHERIT THE EARTH. Written by Rachel Blundred and MikeyB.  Illustrated by MikeyB.

To find out how Colin's story ends contact the Midlands Comics Collective and ask for a copy of 'The End' anthology.
